Graduate Shool of Agriculture (Master's Program)

Department of Environmental Sciences

Food and environment are two of the largest issues of this century. One of the tasks charged to agroforestry environmental sciences is the building of a healthy and affluent society by developing a cyclic production system while protecting the lifestyle of nature-rich rural communities, and finding solutions for food and environmental problems. In order to meet these challenges, we must develop and expand agricultural and forest lands into a productive infrastructure. We must also improve working and living conditions, as well as the processing, storage and distribution of local agricultural products so as to develop cyclic production technologies for local resources. Rural communities have unique cultures and lifestyles rooted in endemic agriculture and forestry. We must ensure that these communities are developed on the foundations of their historical and cultural legacies.

The unit specialized in rural environmental science focuses on multi-faceted studies of the relationships among nature and society in rural areas, productive infrastructure and technologies, economy, management, public policies and planning. At the same time, students learn how to ensure the compatibility of the development of the rural areas and the preservation and restoration of the local environment through a comprehensive study of local environmental systems consisting of forest, farmland and water system. To promote research and education in practical fields, the unit provides its students with learning opportunities ranging from basic knowledge to practical experience, including field surveys under the guidance of the professors as well as the other faculty members affiliated with the Field Science Center of the University.
